The launch of the Deaf Interpreter Program at Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC) represents a significant step toward advancing Deaf-led education and workforce development in Canada. This workshop will examine the foundational principles, design process, and implementation of a Deaf-centered curriculum that prioritizes Deaf epistemology, linguistic integrity, and community engagement. Participants will gain insight into how the program integrates applied learning, mentorship, and real-world interpreting contexts to prepare Deaf Interpreters for complex and evolving communication environments.
The session will also address challenges encountered during program development, including institutional structures, assessment design, and accessibility considerations, while highlighting solutions grounded in collaboration and innovation. Emphasis will be placed on building sustainable pathways for Deaf Interpreters through partnerships with industry and community stakeholders.
This workshop is ideal for educators, program developers, and Deaf professionals seeking to expand or strengthen Deaf Interpreter education and leadership globally.
