Video translation work for Deaf translators is a new and growing specialty. There is an increased demand for information to be accessible in ASL, such as public announcements/news, educational videos, testing systems, online trainings, and educational content. Two challenging components of translation work are: first, the decision to target a specific audience versus the widest audience possible, and second, mastering the technical side of video translation work.
This workshop has several parts to offer participants an overview of what they need to know to be prepared to provide the highest quality translation work possible: How translation differs from other interpretation work.
Each part of the translation process (preparation, rendition of translation, review, and distribution)
- Formal (literal) vs dynamic translation continuum,
- Identifying the goal(s) of each translation work
- Different review processes (back translation, internal, and external review)
- Strategies for effective text analysis
- Achieving ideal technical setups, including for timed translation work
- Recognizing that not all translators/translations would look the same, as they each bring their own flavor and extralinguistic knowledge (ELK).
Christine Multra Kraft & Jamers Speier
Christine Multra Kraft is an interpreter trainer, Sorenson Interpreter Academy Director, CDI working in the Indianapolis community, and DASL supporting theatrical productions. She was part of the team that established the Deaf Interpreter Academy and has a passion for supporting new interpreters to start up their professional work.
Jamers is a Certified Deaf Interpreter with 20 years of experience serving Deaf communities across a wide range of settings. Jamers has worked in roles spanning onsite and video remote interpreting, video relay interpreting, operations, mentoring, hiring, and managing special services, all while advocating for communication access. She currently serves as Director of Translation Services at Sorenson, where she oversees Corporate Interpreters and Post‑Production teams.
